plan a visit to the goondocks (aka astoria, oregon)

Goonies fans are welcome in Astoria! (updated May 2023)
There is plenty to see and do in this area besides visiting the house from The Goonies. Oregon’s North Coast is a vacation destination offering nationally significant historic sites, abundant outdoor recreation, award-winning culinary offerings, and so much more.

From Kindergarten Cop to Short Circuit, Oregon’s North Coast has been host to a number of great 80s and 90s films.

Scout the spots: Take a self-guided tour of the “goondocks” movie scene locations throughout Astoria:

  • Stage your own breakout at the old Clatsop County Jail, now the Oregon Film Museum.

  • Have a soda or bowl a game at the bowling alley. It was from this location that Chunk saw the Fratelli police chase in the opening scenes.

  • Check out the Flavel House museum, where Mikey's dad worked in the film.

  • Enjoy the working riverfront where Stef snagged her crab at the east end marina.

  • While there, look across the highway where you'll see the store from deleted scenes and the "goonies house" perched above it on the hillside.

    • Find the Historic Oregon Film Trail sign on the riverwalk near the marina and Comfort Suites for a great vantage point of the Kindergarten Cop school and Mikey's house.

  • Andy's cheerleading practice took place at Warren Field The field is no longer there as the local hospital expanded its campus with a cancer care center on the site of the former field.

  • Drive south on Hwy 101 to Cannon Beach where you can see Haystack Rock, the area where the Fratellis joined the beach race and Ecola State Park, the setting for the restaurant hideout.

Stop by the Oregon Film Museum or our Visitor Center to learn about these and other film locations.

What is the situation with visiting the house?
We still encourage you to view the house from The Goonies from a distance at these public locations rather than going to this private home:

Click here for a MAP of viewing locations.

  • Astoria River Walk (from Safeway to 37th Street)

  • Columbia Baseball Fields (adjacent to Hwy 30 at 35th Street)

  • Neighborhood Sidewalk (a few great views from the sidewalk of Duane)

If you visit the neighborhood:

  • Do not drive on Duane street east of 37th as it is a dead end, very narrow and parking is extremely limited.  We suggest parking on Duane near Astor Elementary School – on weekends and when school is not in session there is typically a lot of parking on 36th and Franklin Avenue.

  • The house is not a museum - there is not an interior tour offered. You may take a photo of the house from the sidewalk on Duane. Some people choose to walk up the gravel driveway (38th Street) and get their photo there. If you do, please stay to the side of the road so that residents in cars can get around you.

  • Be courteous. Make your visit brief. Keep voices down, come during reasonable daytime hours, don’t litter, leave your pet in the car, etc.

  • Please stay off of private property - this includes neighboring yards & driveways as well as the porch of the goonies house.

  • Do a self-assessment - do you really NEED a photo from up close to the home, or are you fine with one from a few blocks away or with a visit to the film museum?

Set Jetters
Film tourism is popular across the world. Here is a resource for visiting movie sites that expands beyond our community: SetJetters App is a tool to find locations from film and TV scenes, with ShotSync to capture side-by-side comparison to the original film’s shot. Oregon Film Museum
Did you know more than 300 films and television shows have been made in Oregon? View Goonies displays, learn more about the film industry in Astoria and around the state, and access interactive green-screens to make your own clips. There you can reenact the Fratelli break out scene, since this museum is housed in the historic county jail used in the opening scene of The Goonies.

Historic Oregon Film Trail
The Oregon Film Trail is a statewide network of recognizable trail markers, placed in many iconic filming locations across Oregon. By stitching together these locations, communities, and films, a forum has been created, both virtual and real, in which we can retell stories, and celebrate Oregon’s rich contribution to filmmaking since 1904. Visit their site to access a map of trail markers and plan your trip into the history of Oregon film.
